Factory-Reconditioned Cuisinart DCC-1200FR Brew Central 12-Cup Coffeemaker, Brushed Stainless Steel Review

Factory-Reconditioned Cuisinart DCC-1200FR Brew Central 12-Cup Coffeemaker, Brushed Stainless Steel
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Would I buy this coffee maker for the full price of the new model? Probably not. But the reconditioned one is a great value.
It looks great, as is apparent from the photo. Keep in mind, though, that as a reconditioned unit, it may have some minor blemishes to its appearance. Mine, for example, has a very small dent in the stainless steel on its left side. It's not noticable unless you're looking for it, and that alone wouldn't keep me from recommending this coffee maker. (Also, as previous reviewers have noted, this model does NOT come with a permanent filter like the new model does.)
What's a little iffier about it, though, are a couple strange design issues that affect usability.
Every coffee maker I've ever owned has had a flip-top carafe--but not this one. You have to physically remove the lid to pour water into the carafe--a minor inconvenience, but an inconvenience nonetheless.
You need the carafe to measure water, because there's no water-level indicator on the coffee maker itself. Additionally, the water filter takes up a lot of the space under the lid, meaning that there's a relatively small space to pour the water into from the carafe. It's enough room that someone without any mobility problems shouldn't have any issues getting the water in, but it takes a little getting used to.
Overall, I'd recommend the reconditioned model of the Brew Central. It's not so great that I'd replace it with another one of the same model if it became unusable, but good enough that I'm glad to have it on the counter.

Nescafe Dolce Gusto by Krups Piccolo Coffee Machine Review

Nescafe Dolce Gusto by Krups Piccolo Coffee Machine
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this coffee machine yesterday at Walmart after much research into Keurig, Tassimo and Senseo units.
My first impression is that it's compact and ideal for the counter top. It's much simpler than the others in that there aren't a great number of moving parts. It is basic, but I really didn't need another LCD clock! The on-off switch glows red when the machine is thinking and goes green when ready. After 5 minutes it shuts itself off. This auto-shut-off can be disabled if you so choose. The simplicity should mean it's more reliable. Time will tell!
It's quick to brew (20-30 secs?) and makes little noise/vibration and the coffee is nice and hot. Keurig seems to have a lot of quality issues mechanically and with brew strength/temp. if you read the reviews. With the DG you turn it on, it thinks for about 20-30 secs then it's ready to brew. The capsule drops into a plastic, but nicely solid and substantial holder that you slide out of the head of the machine after raising a lever that, when closed pierces the capsule and snugs it in place. You move another chunky lever to brew and stop brewing, choosing hot or cold with the lever direction, so you have direct control over the type, amount and strength of the brew.
I found the Caffee Americano way too strong for my liking at about the recommended 7 or so fl oz, so I continued to fill my cup with more to weaken it. The Chococino really tastes and feels like Hot Chocolate if you keep to the recommended water volume. It might take a while to get to know how you brew the drink to best suit your taste.
The price of the capsules is comparable to the competitors, though Nescafe hasn't the variety offered by Keurig - give it time perhaps. Walmart has good stocks of the capsules. Nescafe also sends you a free box when you register and subsequent purchases earn reward points for more free capsules (1 free box for 10 bought). Their website is like a coffee lover's club with a forum, shop, quizzes, FAQ and product information.
The coffee and chocolate is very good in that it is strong, hot and the milk capsules that accompany such drinks are smooth and creamy and not at all artificial in terms of taste/texture. You do have to control the relative quantities of milk/coffee/chocolate yourself with each capsule, so you have to watch over the brew, but then you have total control to make it like you like
The reservoir is 21 fl oz and is very easy to remove and fill, if a little small. But then you can't have compact and water capacity!
The capsules make very little mess, though I note that when you remove the holder to throw away the capsule, there are a couple drips from the capsule to watch out for.
So far I like it and would recommend it if you want this type of coffee maker. It does make good coffee and chocolate quickly with no mess.
UPDATE: Dec 8 2010
So far so good. I have learned to control the strength of my Cappuccino Light by watching the color (hence strength) of the stream coming from the capsules and turning off the brew. It also helps using the same glass cup as I can also judge the volumes of the milk and coffee. I have eliminated the drips from the capsules when discarding; wait until the green light comes on, watch for the last couple drops to fall, then discard - no drips and the capsule holder remains nice and clean.
Everything really does feel solid and well-built. Very happy so far.
UPDATE Dec 29 2010
Still happy with it. No problems at all. I didn't notice before but the capsule holder is magnetic in that when it is partially inserted, the magnet pulls it into position. This gives it a nice solid feel, which is my general opinion about this whole unit.
I use a large glass cup (so I can see how much milk Vs Coffee) that uses almost all the capacity of the water reservoir. I don't like strong coffee and fill the cup 3/4 full with the milk (that's why the Dolce Gusto is good; you choose how much water to flow through the capsules) and then I add the cappuccino. I still get a good flavor though as the capsules can make really strong coffee). This large cup requires the base to be set at the bottom, but is too tall for the next position up for the base. This leaves about a 2" gap under the capsule holder. When the unit starts up, it looks like the 15 bar pressure blows the seal in the bottom of the capsule. There is a slight delay, then you can hear the seal give way and the milk or coffee starts to flow. Occasionally, the stream from the capsule is not straight and columnar. It is twisted and rough. This looks to me like the seal is not completely opened by the pressure and part of the seal is disturbing the flow pattern. This is when I see some spatter of tiny milk droplets onto the coffee machine and onto the table; splashes from the liquid surface in my cup. No big deal, but just have to wipe it up with a damp cloth. With the right height of cup, this won't happen.
I have settled to drinking the Cappuccino Skinny. I like Cappuccino and the Skinny version is only 50 calories! I use this in my office, making 2-3 cups per day.

Strikingly modern in a sleek, compact size, this single-serve coffeemaker not only adds contemporary appeal to any kitchen counter--without taking up a lot of space--but it also brews up delicious beverages quickly and effortlessly. The unit works with easy-to-use capsules that come sealed with pre-measured ingredients for mess-free brewing and foolproof results. Choose from a variety of hot drinks--espresso, caffe lungo, caffe americano, cappuccino, mocha, and more--as well as cold drinks like cappuccino ice and peach tea.
To use, simply add water to the 21-ounce removable water tank, insert the coffee or tea capsule into the magnetic capsule holder, secure the locking handle, and slide the selection lever to hot or cold depending on the beverage desired. With a press of the "on" button, the machine takes care of the rest, dispensing the beverage into whatever cup has been placed below. When finished, discard the used coffee capsule, rinse the capsule holder, and the machine's ready for the next cycle--without any transfer of flavor from one cup to the next (beverages never come in contact with the machine).
The single-serve multi-purpose beverage machine comes equipped with 1500 watts of power, for fast heating in less than a minute, and a 15-bar Thermoblock pump pressure system that helps ensure a foamy froth, rich crema, and full flavor (other single-cup home brewers offer only 1 to 3 bars of pressure). The machine's Custom Control Lever allows for instantly alternating between hot and cold beverages or for customizing the strength and mixture (for multi-capsule drinks). Other highlights include an on/off button, energy-saving auto shut-off, a height-adjustable drip tray with a stainless-steel grid for any size cup or glass, and dishwasher-safe parts for quick cleanup. Accessories include a six-count variety pack of capsules, quick start guide, step-by-step instructions, and a welcome brochure. The single-serve beverage machine measures 8-2/3 by 6-1/4 by 11-2/7 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.

How It Works
NESCAFÉ® Dolce Gusto® machines heat water, which is passed at high pressure - a maximum of 15 bars -into the coffee cup through a capsule of high-quality NESCAFÉ® roast and ground coffee. The coffee that is used in the capsules is made of premium 100% Arabica beans.

The high pressure and the capsules are designed to deliver an even distribution of water and pressure over the coffee to ensure that flavor is maximized. This system uses pressure similar to that of professional machines.

While drip coffee machines operate at one bar of pressure (normal atmospheric pressure) and a number of competing machines operate at no more than two bars, the NESCAFÉ® Dolce Gusto® system can operate at up to 15 bars of pressure. Each capsule makes one cup of coffee in under a minute.

Chemex Drip Coffee Carafe - 8 Cup Review

Chemex Drip Coffee Carafe - 8 Cup
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Using a Chemex requires water to be heated in a tea kettle prior to brewing, and it requires a finer ground than what auto-drip machines ask for. After the water is brought to a boil, it's important to wait for it to cool just slightly (about 30 seconds) and then you need to wet the grounds in the filter, wait for them to drain, and then fill the pot with water. Want more than a single cup of coffee? You wait for your first pour to brew, and then fill the filter again.
Some advantages over other forms of coffee brewing:
1. Taste: I don't know how it does it, but the filter does keep your coffee from being bitter.
2. Cleanability: Users can keep all necessary components clean (anyone who's brewed water and vinegar through their coffee maker to kill off a bitter taste that wasn't there when you bought it understands this plight). Oftentimes, the most aggressive criticism of the Chemex is its ponderousness to clean because it's not possible to get your hand into the reservoir. Some people prefer to add hot water and soap and give it a good rinse, which is fine if you clean the moment you empty the pot, but if you're like me and you let the remaining sip or two sit until a nice coffee stain is on the glass, then you need some good 'ol fashion friction to get it clean. The best thing I've found: a baby bottle cleaner. It's narrow enough to get into the reservoir and the angle can be adjusted to scrap the walls, too. Brilliant!
3. Electricity Free: As long as you can boil water, you can have coffee.
4. Mud/Sludge: French press and stove-top espresso-style brewing always leaves a thick slime at the bottom of an otherwise rich cup of coffee. Don't get me wrong: I think that's good (I use a French Press when I'm in the mood), but the cone on a Chemex doesn't allow that at all.
5. Style/Size: the Chemex coffee pot is a relic (designed in the 40s) and the wood cuff with rawhide tie screams simplicity and elegance and it's a wonderful, minimalist sight on any kitchen counter (and unlike electric coffee makers, easy to move if you need the space).
Some drawbacks any purchaser should consider:
1. Time: it does take 5 - 10 minutes of labor to get the morning cup of coffee.
2. Cones: you can't run over to Wal-Mart when you use the last filter; you need to find a specialty store or go online, which means you need to plan ahead.
3. Cold Coffee: no electric hot plate (thank god) means coffee not poured and consumed immediately gets cold quickly. You can buy a wire guard and a glass lid so your Chemex can be warmed on the stovetop. I think that's more labor added to an already laborious endeavor. Just have a warmed thermos ready and use that to store any unused coffee.
4. Learning Curve: It does take some time to get the grind right, the amount right and the water level right to find a cup which caters to your tongue.
5. Cleanability: I know this is in the advantages column, as well, but it's worth mentioning that a lot of people hate cleaning these things. To submerge it does mean pulling off the wood cuff (which is a small pain) else it will get nasty over time.

Do you live alone? Are you the only coffee drinker in the house? Do large portions of your coffee go down the drain? Then this is perfect. Sunbeam Hot Shot Beverage Machine Review

Sunbeam Hot Shot Beverage Machine
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a marvelous appliance because it is just so darn simple! I bought one to keep in my office at work for making tea, and it has worked out great!
There isn't even an on/off switch. Just put water in it, plug it in, and a red light goes off when it is ready to pour. Put a mug under the dispenser, push the lever, and there you go!
One reviewer said that it does not have a fill-to line, and so water can spill over. I don't see this as a problem. Just heat as much water as you need. I fill up my mug with hot water, pour the water into the appliance, and dispense the water when it is hot back into the mug. Oddly enough, I get out exactly the same amount as I put in! Don't try to heat more than 16 ounces at a time.
The Hot Shot does only one thing, but boy does it do it well! Easy to use, simple to clean, and attractive on the counter. Love having hot tea without fussing with heating water in the office microwave!

Nescafe Dolce Gusto Single Serve Coffee Machines Review

Nescafe Dolce Gusto Single Serve Coffee Machines
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I want to love this machine. If you are considering purchasing the Dolce Gusto machine I STRONGLY suggest you sample the coffee first (I think Sur La Table has demo machines). Here's what I like about the machine:
* The design is sleek.
* It's well made and sturdy.
* The machine heats the water up really fast- once you turn it you're ready to make coffee in well under a minute.
* The machine is incredibly easy to use. (see attached video for a demo of a cappuccino)
* No real cleanup required after each use.
Now for the bad...
* The machine comes with a latte macchiato glass, a cappuccino cup and saucer. Unfortunately the packaging was very poor (not enough bubble wrap) and the saucer arrived cracked.
* The coffee is horrible. As good as the physical machine is... it is only as good as the coffee it makes. All the milk based Dolce Gusto drinks are excessively sweet, taste artificial and have a ton of sugar and have anywhere from 3.5g-6g of fat.
*The non-milk drinks are very disappointing as well. Both the espresso and lungo aren't very strong and taste very average.
I have posted video demonstrations for each of the drinks in my reviews of :
* Cappuccino
* Espresso
* Chococino
* Caffe Lungo
* Latte Macchiato

NespressoC100 PianoBlack/Aerocc Review

NespressoC100 PianoBlack/Aerocc
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Nespresso system is about as simple as coffee making gets - you turn on the device until it heats up (about 30 seconds), put the pod into the holder, press GO and in 20 seconds or so you have the perfect espresso shot. There are variety of pod blends available, and the machine is capable of producing a shot so smooth it would rival any professional coffee house.
My own real criticism is the price - this machine is expensive for something that essential boils and pumps water. But it is elegantly designed and has a small footprint and is guaranteed to become a conversation piece in your home or workplace. The second problem is that the pods themselves are expensive and can only be ordered directly from Nespresso. It's easy to create a $100-a-month coffee habit that's hard to justify in this economy, so I went back to my Mr Coffee maker after 3 months of Nespresso addiction.
But if you're in the market for pod-based espresso, I'd recommend this machine.

Swissmar Mountable Storage Unit for Nespresso Coffee Capsules Review

Swissmar Mountable Storage Unit for Nespresso Coffee Capsules
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm someone who is pretty critical of products, and have written some pretty scathing reviews of items that I feel have let me down. But having bought two of these, I just do NOT understand the bad reviews. First, I find it astounding that even ONE person (let alone THREE) would think that the rack comes with the capsules. Really? Do you also think your breakfast cereal comes with the fruit, bowls, silverware, and smiling children on the box? I mean, no offense people, but come on... use your heads. (And as most people who buy nespresso know, you can only buy the capsules from nespresso. no other entity sells them. annoying, yes, but that's the way it is.) Second, while I can't exactly say that it is an economical solution (if you want that, a cardboard box or existing drawer would probably work just fine), it is WAY cheaper than anything on nespresso's own site (their capsule storage solutions are jokes -- I'm a total sucker for consumer goods and even I won't pay the ridiculous prices they charge). While I understand the criticism that there should be additional mounting options besides the double stick mounting tape, it's not THAT big of a deal. (In my case, the double stick mounting tape they supplied kind of sucked, not nearly sticky or adhesive enough for the inside of my cabinet door, and I heard a crash in the middle of the night and woke up to capsules all over the shelves!I replaced it with heavy duty velcro adhesive, and I've never had a problem since. So yes, I'll deduct one star for the lame mounting tape.) But for people with criticisms like "what if I move?": It's SO easy to go to a hardware store and get new velcro or new mounting tape for your new house. You can pick it up while you're buying moving boxes!

As someone who has owned the Miele coffeemaker, this thermador BICM24cs 24 is way better due to its straightforward design, and ease of use. I will note that the only negative is that it is a bigger unit than the miele, but if you have the space, you will enjoy the Thermador. I would have given it 5 stars but as we just got it, I do not want to jinx myself. However, I am very happy with this coffeemaker so far.

DeLonghi DCF212T Drip Coffeemaker with Convenient Front Access Review

DeLonghi DCF212T Drip Coffeemaker with Convenient Front Access
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When my $100 coffee maker quit, I researched coffee makers and found this model from DeLonghi I hadn't heard of before. The design of this model sets a new standard for on-the-counter coffee makers. It is incredible to be able to put the filter, coffee, AND WATER in the maker without moving the machine. The caraffe doesn't drip when pouring into the swing out arm (or into the cup later) so there's no messy drips to wipe up at any time.
The digital clock isn't the quickest to set since you have to hold a button in as it changes in minutes only, but hopefully that won't need set often.
The "aroma" button really works! There actually is a difference in the brewing aroma with it on.
Most importantly, the end product was a great cup of coffee! I'm thrilled with the coffee maker and haven't found a single negative aspect yet, including the price. I HIGHLY recommend this model. Kudos Delonghi, you really outdid yourself here. Amazon's shipping was simple and fast. The whole purchasing experience was exceptional. A+++++

I like the look of this coffee maker- and the removeable water tank (no water to spill while filling). It brews relatively fast, coffee tastes good, but no automatic shutoff!! This is the Neatest machine, just the right size, just the right color. But the coffee is great. It pours slow to avoid a mess and we use 'cone #2 ' filter as we don't like the used grounds in our septic tank and it makes for a cleaner mess. We may use the included non-throw-away filter at a later date.
We recommend this Small Pretty Coffee Maker to anyone with our flavored values. Good Luck.

There is a dirty little secret that many of these appliance companies don't want you to know. Manual drip coffee from a simple cone device makes the best coffee. Here's why. You need to have two tablespoons of coffee for every cup. The water must be just below the boiling point when it hits the grounds. Water which is poured in one little stream on top of dry grounds will cause a funnel effect an most of the grounds won't immersed effectively.
The fancy auto-drip coffee makers don't heat the grounds effectively and don't cover them with water properly in the brewing process. If most people really looked at the back of their coffee maker and looked at where the water is kept in reserve, they would call a Haz-Mat team to clean it up.
Why get this instead of a cheap plastic cone, the filter paper is thicker with the Chemex, retains more bitter oils and the thick glass of the Chemex will keep the coffee warm enough for a second cup (I would suggest getting the glass lid for it also.

Nespresso 3194-Us-Bk Aeroccino and Milk Frother Review

Nespresso 3194-Us-Bk Aeroccino and Milk Frother

I bought this because my wife & I wanted to add frothed milk to our coffee, but we didn't want to buy or use a full-on espresso machine and its steam wand. We use it in conjuction with our Cuisinox Roma 6-cup Stainless Steel Stovetop Espresso Maker.
I was skeptical at first. I'd never seen nor heard of a device like this. After unpacking and cleaning, it was ready to go. Very simple usage, very simple instructions. It's so easy to make frothed milk now!
It uses a silent, magnetically driven spinner to mix the milk inside of a container that simultaneously warms up the milk. It uses a whisk-type spinner for frothing or a smoother spinner for simply stirring the milk. It does not heat/cook the milk like a steam wand, it simply warms it up. The whisk-type stirrer gives the milk foam. The combination of heat and whisking provides for a very good milk froth that's firm and won't break down in minutes.
Here's a quick breakdown:
Pros:
* Warm, frothy milk is attained in about 1 minute.
* It is very consistent.
* It makes enough froth for one or two servings, depending on your preferences.
* It is very easily cleaned.
* It is very quiet, almost silent. You can now froth while your partner sleeps!
* It can be used to make warm or cool milk & coffee drinks.
* One stirring device for froth, one for latté.
Cons:
* It does not heat the milk to the same temperature as a steam wand.
* It does not caramelize the milk sugars as efficiently as a steam wand.
* It cannot froth heavy cream. The magnetic spinner does not have that much torque.
* It cannot caramelize skim milk.
Guidelines:
* Use whole milk for best results.
* Use half & half when more cream is needed.
* Rice milk, soy milk and skim milk won't work well.

Saeco Vienna Plus Graphite Espresso Machine Review

Saeco Vienna Plus Graphite Espresso Machine

We purchased this expresso maker after our first one, which we owned for years and years, finally died on us. We decided to get it repaired, but give it to our son and buy a new one for ourselves. When the new expresso maker arrived, we were terribly disappointed. Compared to the first machine, the quality of workmanship is shockingly poor. The pieces fit poorly together and have play between them. Sometimes just touching them moves them out of alignment. The first machine was tight and well-constructed.
The heating element isn't as good either. My husband and I have both noticed that the water isn't as hot when it comes out of the machine. Neither does the machine dispense as much water. We've had to turn the setting to the Max to get a complete cup of coffee. This may be by design, however, and not a negative. Turning our previous coffee maker to the Max setting resulted in overfilling the cup. Larger cups that would accommodate the increased amount do not fit well and are spilled when they're tipped for removal from the machine.
As for making the coffee, expresso, etc., the machine does just fine. It's internal functions seem to work well. I suppose my real concern here is that, if the quality of the rest of the machine is any indication, this one may not last as long as the first one and we may have to send it off for repair too. If that happens, I'm not sure we'll ever replace this one with another like it. We may look at other brands, even if it means spending more money--which it will.

Dip-It Automatic Drip Coffeemaker Cleaner: 7 OZ Review

Dip-It Automatic Drip Coffeemaker Cleaner: 7 OZ

When I was going to school (Purdue) in 1955, I worked at a "fixit" shop, where we repaired all sorts of small appliances like toasters, mixers, irons, coffeemakers and other things. One day my boss came in and said, "Here, use this stuff in that coffeepot you just fixed before you tell the owner it's done." He handed me a package of DIP-IT! I didn't think too much about it, but followed the instructions and ran a pot of Dip-It instead of coffee. The inside of the pot sparkled! It took no time at all, and the product was pretty cheap. From then on, we used it in all coffeepots we repaired, just to give the customers a treat when they picked up their coffeepots. I am amazed and pleased that this product is still available after all these years!!
---Sincerely, Jerry McMurry Retired Engineer.
