Keurig Single Serve Coffee and Tea Brewing System Select B77 Review

Keurig Single Serve Coffee and Tea Brewing System Select B77
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
While it worked, it was a great machine. The coffee was great and so was the hot chocolate. Very convenient for the whole family. I even found K-cups at my local Stop and Shop grocery store for only 5.99 for a box of 12.
I received this for Christmas and it stopped working on New Year's day. Machine rumbles displaying "Not Ready" then shuts off. After keeping it powered off for about an hour it started working again, but then konked out, once again, mid brew. I wrote to customer service on Keurig's website and didn't get a reply after 5 days, so I called their 866 number.
After waiting on hold for approx. an hour for a technician, I was told that I was not allowed to wait any longer on hold and that they would call me back after 24 to 48 hours. The person I spoke to said that they have had an influx of calls with this problem since Christmas. Must be a bad batch that went out. I was also told that if they had replied by email, they would have told me to call, so don't waste your time with email.
I purchased the machine from Costco, but no longer have the box, so I don't know if I can return to them. If I am not able to get any satisfaction from Keurig, I will try going back to Costco. I will update this review with the final status of this problem.
1/10/10 update: I had to wait 3 days for a technician to call me back. The technician told me to use a paper clip and make sure the top and bottom spouts were clear and we ran through several hot water cycles on different cup settings.
I don't know if this 'fixed' the problem because at that point it had been working again. The tech. said that the hot cocoa cups could clog the spouts (although I do run a hot water cycle after each hot cocoa cup is 'brewed'). She also said there may be a problem with the separate filter that allows me to use my own coffee as opposed to their K-Cups. After her call, I stopped using the hot cocoa and the separate filter and so far have not had any problems.
1/26/10 update- The machine started shutting off yet again. I contacted customer service and they promptly told me that they would send me a new machine. The new machine is working perfectly (so far) and the "motor" definitely sounds different. I am hopeful. I had to send them a part from the old machine within 30 days in order to not be charged for the new machine.
When it works, this really is a great machine and so convenient. I hope I got a good one this time around.

Capresso 455 CoffeeTEAM Therm Stainless Coffeemaker/Burr Grinder Combination Review

Capresso 455 CoffeeTEAM Therm Stainless Coffeemaker/Burr Grinder Combination
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have to say, I'm more than a little confused by the negative feedback this coffee maker seems to be receiving as we've had quite the opposite experience with it-- in fact, we've been nothing short of ecstatic with its functioning. It's a bit counterintuitive at first, but once you get a feel for its system, this is a nice little pot.
My wife and I were committed to buying a suit-all-our-needs coffee maker right after our wedding, and after substantial research, we came up with this unit.
After witnessing my brother and his wife with their grinder/brewer combination, I was filled with envy-- I hate grinding coffee. The CoffeeTEAM combines a burr grinder with the brewer, grinding into a filter basket (with an included conical permenant coffee filter) on a spring mechanism which then swings to allow hot water to be forced through the beans.
Both the beans and water are top loaded into their chambers-- the bean chamber holds enough for about 18 cups of coffee, the water reservoir holds enough for 10 cups and has a cover that flips up that rests on top of the filter basket when it's used for brewing.
The grinder has a handful of sizes you can adjust the grind to-- I've kept mine fairly large as I've been using fairly oily coffee. The beans are ground and deposited into this little chamber. This next triggers a series of springs that push the grounds into the filter basket and swings the basket to receive water.
A few points about this process-- some residual beans are left in the little chamber after the grinding. These are used for the next pot of coffee-- I discovered early on if you clean this out, the next pot will be noticably weak (they warn you the first pot will be weak in the manual, but forget to mention this-- I suspect this is why one of the other reviewers had trouble with coffee being too weak). There's a thin piece of hard plastic with a rubber washer in the middle that fits over the top of the filter basket-- this MUST be fitted evenly and the rubber washer MUST be snugly attached. Additionally, the water reservoir must be down when you push the basket to the grinder. Not doing any of these will result in the spring mechanism not swinging the basket properly-- it took me a few tries to get this right, but there was no mess made and it was more a learning curve than anything else (the good news is that if the basket doesn't swing back, a fail-safe stops the brewing process).
The coffee is brewed into a thermal carafe which must be lined up carefully to prevent spillage-- I've yet to have this spill due to line up problems and I'm pretty impatient, it's not a hard process. We haven't tested to see how long it keeps coffee hot for, but it's at least 3-4 hours. My wife takes her coffee a couple hours after brewing and has no complaints about temperature or degraded taste.
Controls are pretty straight forward, there's two buttons and a knob that serves as a third button. The knob is used to program everything-- for both on-demand and timer-triggered brewing you can set number of cups to brew and strength, the clock, and the time to kick off brewing. The top button starts the brewing process immediately, the bottom button sets the timer-trigger brewing.
You can override the grinding by not swinging the filter basket over in case you want flavored beans, etc. I've not done this. Additionally, removing the carafe during brewing allows you to pour yourself a cup from the carafe, saving those goofy slide-the-carafe-out-and-cup-in games. I just revised my review concerning this functionality as I used it for the first time this morning-- it is flawless-- carafe comes out, coffee stops, carafe goes back in, coffee restarts. Finally, the last feature of the coffee pot is a "descale" warning to indicate when you need to clean the coffee pot. In a previous review, I said this was missing, but it just came on for our maker.
All the coffee we've made tastes superb-- admittedly, I've been starting with good beans, first what we brought back from our honeymoon in Hawai'i and then from a favorite coffeehouse near where I grew up, but it's as good as any coffeemaker I've used.
Cleanup has been pretty easy so far-- we've had the maker maybe six weeks and the carafe has a wide mouth when you remove the lid so it's easy to clean (something I've hated in other carafes). The filter basket and associated components all come out and are easy to wash. I do wish the bean container could be removed, but so far, I've just been wiping oil deposits down per recommendations. The burrs are not accessible, so there's no way to clean then other than grinding no beans per recommendations.
Things I wish the maker had: a large bean container-- I'd love to have a unit that could just fit a half pound or a pound of beans-- I'm constantly having to pour more beans into it. This is a minor annoyance. Somewhat more lacking is a water filter-- my last coffee maker had this and it was a nice feature-- I've gotten around this by pouring filtered water into it, so again this is a small complaint.
None of these shortcomings are big enough to make me regret purchasing the unit, even at its price, it's served us well for the past several weeks and the coffee it makes it consistently fantastic.

Tassimo Hot Beverage System-Black Review

Tassimo Hot Beverage System-Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I admit it. I love the smell of fresh coffee, but after it's sat for a while in a coffee pot, growing stronger and more bitter by the microsecond, I hate coffee. A friend of my daughter's bought her a Tassimo as a wedding gift, and every time we visited, she offered us the hot beverage of our choice. Now one thing I am for sure is a gadget-lover, and I fell in love with this one. So my daughter, son and husband surprised me with this wonderful machine on my recent birthday. As I sit here writing this review, I am enjoying a cup of Gevalia with cream. And I didn't have to make a whole pot which I would later end up dumping because of bitter taste which makes me cringe to think about.
When I don't feel like having coffee, I can make tea, cappuccino, latte, and many others (I'm sure) which I haven't yet discovered. Every morning, my husband has his traditional Lipton tea first and then his second beverage before heading off to work, a fresh cup of breakfast coffee. My son's favorite is Maxwell House French Vanilla. Within a few short minutes, we can each have the beverage of our choice.
So, if you're like me ... a finicky coffee drinker, or if you just want to improve your coffee experience, this is the machine for you. Buy one ... and have a cup of coffee on me!

Kalorik CM-25282 1000-Watt 12-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker, Aztec Copper Review

Kalorik CM-25282 1000-Watt 12-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker, Aztec Copper
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I almost did not buy this product because of the reviews, but I did not believe that Consumers Report Magazine could be that wrong. This report stated that this product made excellent coffee due to the correct brewing temperature. That is exactly what the Kalorik does. After using it for several weeks now, I cannot support a single complaint against this product, except one. The pot is difficult to get back into the machine. Not because it fits too tightly as reported, but because the part that holds the coffee grounds sometimes prevents the pot from entering all the way. Another ridiculous complaint was that the opening was too small to pour the water. I do not have a clue what that was all about. I am a 78 year old man and I can pour a full pot of water into the machine without spilling a drop. There is two large openings on both sides of the machine. Go figure. Another statement was that the Kalorik belched out steam. I learned that hot water makes steam. It takes hot water to make good coffee, so if you do not want the steam, get a pot that does not heat the water and you will eliminate the steam problem. Again, I did not find the steam to be excessive and I have the coffee maker under the cupboards. The Kalorik is not pretty, but it makes an excellent cup of coffee. Like a woman, I will take quality over looks anytime.
In short, read between the lines when using customer reviews to help make your purchase.

KRUPS KM8105, 12-Cup Die-Cast Programmable Coffeemaker Review

KRUPS KM8105, 12-Cup Die-Cast Programmable Coffeemaker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Had I read these reviews before buying this coffee maker, I would have stayed away ..... far away. But it looked good in the store, so I went for it. The dripping carafe is the biggest problem. It's really bad. So I called Customer Support (1-800-526-5377) and I must say they were accommodating (must be getting a lot of calls on this one, or they're simply blowing me off!). They took my name and address and said they would ship a redesigned replacement carafe when they become available at the end of December (apparently the carafe's are in the process of being manufactured). I'll wait and see. I like the look and feel of the machine and the coffee is fine, it just makes a mess when you pour.
They did ask if I had the receipt and if I had the machine in front of me (yes on the receipt, no on the machine as I'm at work). However, they did not ask that I fax anything, unlike other reports I've read. So for now, I'll pour over the sink and hope they keep their word.
My one concern is in regards to a company that would actually manufacture and market a product that is obviously poorly designed to the point of being defective. Makes you wonder about the quality control for the rest of the unit. But if you own one of these, and can't or don't want to return it, call Customer Support, ask for a new and improved carafe, and keep your fingers crossed.
Update Dec 18, 2009:
True to their word, my new carafe arrived yesterday. Basically, they widened the spout and removed the baffle. Works perfectly. I'm pleased with the quick response, as I really want to like this machine. No other complaints, although the 2 stage timer advertised on the box would have been a nice addition, especially at this price. So I'm revising my rating from 1 star to 4. If you own one with the old style carafe, call customer service at the number above. The concern someone else mentioned about the removable tank eventually leaking is a possibility, I guess. Time will tell. In the meantime, I'm OK with it.

Not only a sleek-looking addition to any kitchen counter, this commercial-quality coffeemaker also brews up to 12 cups of great-tasting coffee. The appliance features a durable die-cast metal body with a powerful 1100-watt heating system for reaching optimal brewing temperatures between 195 to 205 degrees F--great for extracting all the flavor without the bitterness. The unit's front-loading coffee drawer opens with a pull of the soft-touch handle and closes with a magnetic safety lock, offering easy access to the removable brew basket inside. It also provides a removable water tank with an integrated folding handle for easy transport to the sink for filling. Best of all, its large LCD screen provides an oversized angled display with soft-touch buttons for simple programming. Set the appliance to automatically brew and wake-up to a fresh pot of coffee; its adjustable keep-warm mode allows for keeping coffee hot for one, two, or three hours before shutting off automatically. A 12-cup glass carafe comes included, complete with a stay-cool handle and drip-free pour spout. Other highlights include a water-filtration system for superior coffee flavor, an electronic descaling indicator, and an anti-drip system that prevents coffee from flowing with the drawer open during the brewing cycle. The coffee machine measures 8-1/2 by 8-3/4 by 13-1/4 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.

Average Reviews:

I replaced our old basic coffee machine because after 10 years, the carafe began to leak when you pour. Unfortunately, the new one leaks more! Coffee brews slowly (I like stronger coffee so I use the aroma button) and it could be hotter but really no complaints with the coffee once you get some in your cup. I have tried aligning the arrows, opening the lid a little more, opening a little less. but the carafe just leaks when you pour into your coffee cup unless you completely remove the lid. Pass on this one unless you have alot of patience and don't mind wiping the counter after you pour.

I recently changed colors in my kitchen from red to blue & looked for months for small kitchen electrics in blue. After many tries I chanced upon the Miallegro products and, because they were so inexpensive I decided to give them a try. I purchased 3 products, the stand/hand mixer, the blender & the coffee maker. All three products perform as well or better than the expensive name brands I have used for years...Cuisinart, Kitchen Aid, etc. The mixer can be used as a stand mixer or just pop off the top & use it as a hand mixer. The bowl is a little smaller than other brands, but I have some older mixer bowls that will fit if I need larger. The blender container is much larger than other brands which is nice for making larger batches of drinks & it crushes ice great! It's a little loud, but takes much less time than others I have had, especially if you're using a lot of ice. The coffee maker makes a full 12 cups & has a permanent filter which is so much nicer than using paper filters, and the coffee tastes great. It doesn't have a clock or a programmable feature but I don't need those, so it's not a problem for me.
All in all, I am very pleased with my purchases...by buying 3 at the same time I saved a lot on shipping charges...the total for all three items, including shipping, was under $130! You can't even buy 1 of the big name brands for that. And they're really cute, too, and look great on my kitchen counter!

I have purchased (and agrily returned) four of these products. The reason I've been angry is the same as the rest of the reviewers....great product which makes great coffee but leaks! I finally removed the glass container from the unit, cleaned off the cheap silicone that they use to seal it to the heating element, and re-sealed it with a high-temp gasket maker that I purchased from a auto parts store. NO MORE LEAKING!!! If Chef's Choice would simply use a better silicone sealer, this product would fly off the shelves. I've been using my new and improved press for 6 months now with no problems.

French press or plunge pot coffeemakers have gained popularity with the recent interest in gourmet coffee and coffee products. Fans of this brewing method insist it results in a richer, less bitter, flavor than the typical electric coffeemaker. Many however were somewhat put off by the idea of pouring boiling water into a glass pot. This convenient machine boils the water right in the pot. All you do is add coffee when the water's the correct temperature and insert the plunger when brewing is done. In addition to its brewing virtues, this pot has a decidedly elegant European presence at table.

This is the second one we have purchased in two years and we won't be buying another. The first lasted just over a year and started to leak in both water windows and now, after just three months, the second one is doing the same thing. We loved the look so we called Hamilton Beach and talked to some unconcerned representative, who could care less about the malfunction! We were told that all warranty issues go direct to the engineers, but if that was so, why do we have the same issue a year later??? Our solution is cut the cord off, send in $8 with your receipt, get the replacement, sell it on Ebay to fund buying a better kettle by someone else.

Froth Au Lait Professional S10 Review

Froth au Lait Pro-S10 is The One to Beat! It's hard to imagine anyone can do froth better than Froth au Lait. We've used Pro S-10 for 6 months, and it's simply superb! Not even the best coffee bars in Italy can beat this elegant, yet simple, machine for making superb froth. Thick, beautiful froth holds its composure nearly to the last sip of a home-made cappuccino. Friends and neighbors are astounded, returning often for "another of Debbie's marvelous frothed drinks." Before owning the Froth au Lait Pro-S10, we tried the Nespresso unit and several others. Our experience says there is no other frother in the world that can produce the superb frothed milk created by the Pro-S10. As priced, this product is an excellent value for the froth discerning afficionado.

Professional Stainless Steel Heat On/Off Froth Au Lait frother Review

Professional Stainless Steel Heat On/Off Froth Au Lait frother
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the first non restaurant device I have tried that didn't over flow when frothing with flavorings or liqueurs I have tried around 6 of these and they all overflow either with just whole milk or when flavorings etc. are used. (I have used the European Drinking Chocolate Machine but that's for fairly large buffets or restaurants.)
The Good:
Works well with small or large batches and gets really hot quickly.
Refresh feature works even faster.
Capacity is in a good range for most of us; even a small coffee shop or restaurant
Makes nice hot chocolate with nice froth.
Good for Chaud*, Chai or spiced cider as well as hot chocolate.
UPDATE: Even an eggnog recipe that is OK if you like hot eggnog. Their Cook is too fond of Hazelnut IMHO and I think its better with about a 1/2 oz of Triple sec and 3 oz of brandy along with some Nutmeg and Cinnamon. But I can't really recommend it as all of the Flan mixes I have found have a lot of high Fructose corn sirup Frankly I think that the High Fructose Corn Sirup will be the next trans-fat and should be avoided.
Works well for cold drinks as well.
The spicy froth is nice as a garnish on Fettuccine Alfredo but flops for Toranods.
The Bad:
If you use it with non-fat milk and let he froth really build up it will stay stiff longer; but if you start with more than 2 1/2 cps of milk you will get an overflow onto the counter. Not a big mess but a mess.
The flavor port gets liquid on its bottom and sides so while it works OK for liquids it doesn't work all that well for powders. You need to stop the machine and remove the lid.
Small amount of splatter after removing the flavor port. Lots of splatter if you remove the lid without stopping the machine.
The flavor port is very stiff and needs a little judicious filling down to make it removable.
The Ugly:
Need to remove the top to get froth out.
To get maximum froth you need to run until the machine is almost ready to shut off so the froth will be stiff and not collapse when you add chocolate etc.
Need to run the machine with water between batches and wipe down the outside with a damp towel or sponge.
A bit fussy to clean. The interior of the base may need something like Scotch Brite.
Need to give it a rest after 6 batches.
Noisy (not too bad but it would wake a light sleeper) and vibrates (again not real bad but a surprise).
Can't put in solids that are not grated, ground or finely chopped (can't be used for mulled wine or to make tea. You need to start with tea for chai or the concentrate.)
Pitcher is not bad looking but for formal occasions you need something else for serving.
* Chocolate chaud is the French or Mexican stile Hot Chocolate and is made with water and served with hot milk or cream and sugar on the side , or with Mascarpone cheese floated on top.
I strongly recommend; Hot Chocolate: 50 Heavenly Cups of Comfort;
Ghirardelli Chocolate Premium Hot Cocoa Mix, Double Chocolate, 16-Ounce Tins (Pack of 4), also the hazel nut.
I haven't tried it with any coffee as I hate coffee; can smellgreat but isn't even good as a cleanser.

Froth Au Lait Frothing Unit, White or Black Review

Froth Au Lait Frothing Unit, White or Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For about 5 years I have been searching for the perfect way to get "starbucks style" cappucino at home. Without exaggeration, I have owned:
A miele built in espresso machine with integrated grinder and frothing wand - cost $2600
A kuppersbush built in espresso machine with automatic frothing device - cost $3195
A miele/nespresso built in espresco machine with their special "cappucinatore" cost $2495
A nespresso Aeroccino that is only designed for frothing a tiny amoung of milk - cost $100.
As a custom home builder, I have tried out a lot of products, and obviously, my coffee is important to me. So important...that in 10 years of internet shopping, I have NEVER written an Amazon review...except for this Froth Au Lait Product. So that should tell you how strongly I feel about it.
First of all, it only costs about $50, so how could it be any good I thought? I was skeptical, but for $50...I thought I might as well try it.
Well...let me tell you, this thing is probably the most amazing appliance I own.I have made countless batches of frothed milk in this device, and it not only heats the milk perfectly, but it gives a froth like I have never seen before. You can literally make the froth stand up above the mug...and you can make multiple cups at one time! There is no need to only use 1 1/2 oz of milk like the twice the priced aeroccino! This thing makes multiple servings, and the froth lasts forever. I have a cup of coffee sitting here that I made over 1 hour ago, and it still has froth!!
Not only is this product amazing, the price beyond belief, but on top of all that...there customer service is 2nd to none. I had a simple question about a frothing method, so I emailed froth au lait, and within a couple of hours, they actually called me!!! That never happens.
DO NOT buy the nespresso aeroccino instead of this. (or..actually just email me, and I will sell you mine, since it will never be used again)
Also..I am a custom home builder who has been in business for 15 years. I have no affiliation with this company, and don't even really know where they are located. (I am telling you this because sometimes, employees just happen to write "glowing" reviews about their company's products.)
If you like starbucks style froth, spend the $50 and buy this. If you want to spend $100, get less of a froth, and make a mess doing it, get the nespresso product.

Krups Precision 12 Cup Coffee Maker Review

Krups Precision 12 Cup Coffee Maker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Krups KM4065 12-Cup Stainless-Steel Coffeemaker
This review is for the Krups KM 4065 coffeemaker. I believe this is the first of a new line of coffeemakers designed Bjorn Dahlstrom. At the moment, this coffeemaker is not on the Krups website and there is little information available on the web. I've only had it for a couple of days so here are my initial thoughts.
Pros:
1. Looks fantastic
2. Seems reasonably well built and the top door opens and closes smoothly
3. This has a different water gauge from the FM series and it works well and is easy to read (no bubbles).
4. I've filled the reservoir from both a Brita pitcher and from the included carafe without spillage. (That said the fill area is at the back near the door hinge)
5. Uses #4 Filters
6. Makes a great cup of coffee
7. The included carafe pours well
Cons:
1. Pricey for a unit without a thermal carafe
2. Programming is non-intuitive and a little frustrating
3. Manual could be a lot better
4. Like most stainless steel appliances, fingerprints may be an issue if you are not careful
5. Durability of main button to open top lid remains to be determined
6. Carafe seems a little light and the cover flimsy
Overall, I am very pleased with this beautiful coffeemaker. It looks like the design changes have addressed the water gauge issue with the FM series and so far I've had no leaks. The carafe works well so coffee spillage is not a problem and most importantly my initial experience is that this machine makes good coffee.
I have deducted one star due to the fact I've only had it 2 days and can't attest to the long-term durability of the unit and it is a little pricey compared to competing units.

First a heads-up... the product's picture shows a "black" carafe which might lead you to believe it is a thermal carafe. This is not the case, it is actually a glass carafe filled to the brim with coffee. As such, be forewarned that this product does not include a thermal carafe (I was fooled, but it's interesting to note that Amazon suggested I include "thermal carafe" when "tagging" this review.) Instead, it ships with a glass carafe and features a hot-plate that has a programmable auto shut-off.
My disappointment with the carafe aside, this product has worked marvelously (received it three weeks ago.) It houses a burr grinder as opposed to a cheap blade grinder. It cleans up very easily compared to my old "Melitta MEMB1 Mill & Brew" (less than two minutes to rinse the carafe and filter-chamber/cap; after drying it's ready to be loaded with a new filter in less than 30 seconds.) The bean-hopper has a good seal to it, although I am unsure as to whether the clear plastic used offers UV protection (I would prefer to see a shaded plastic used to protect the beans inside; but I suppose the clear plastic offers a better design-element and the functionality of being able to see the level of beans inside.) And, in terms of the most important aspect, it makes great tasting coffee! (My girlfriend still marvels daily at how good the coffee is.)
Having owned and operated a coffee shop a few years back, I thought I might emphasize the importance of buying a burr grinder vs a blade grinder (for those of you who are interested and new to the art of making gourmet coffee.) First, burr grinders do not produce nearly the level of heat that can be produced by blade grinders. Heat denatures the delicate flavors of the beans (which is also why I was disappointed by having a glass carafe that sits over a direct source of high-heat.) Second, burr grinders ensure that each particle of ground coffee is consistent in size; meaning flavor extraction can be truly optimized and achieved with consistency... The flavor of your coffee is based on the contact time between the beans' chemicals and water; varied sizes of particles means the chemicals are exposed to water for varying amounts of time, and the chemicals have varied distances to travel to escape the fibers of the bean particles. A blade grinder results in variably-variable sizes of particles... meaning variable flavors escaping the clutches of the bean fibers. If you are planning to spend the extra money to buy high-quality beans, it is important to both preserve the chemicals inside (destroyed by heat, light and oxygen) and to extract them in a reasonable manner that enables isolation of the chemicals responsible for "good" flavors.
If the science of coffee interests you, Scientific American had a great article written by Ernesto Illy in June 2002, titled "The Complexity of Coffee." At only 6 pages, it's a pretty quick read and well worth the time. Here's a link: [...]
